Well - I got noe help! I was rather surprised that no-one could think of anything else to try - I certainly could and really just had the idea that something involving XP installation must have happened to some professional with SATA drives becoming the norm now! Guess not - or I frightened some of you.
Anyway, for info, in case someone else has a similar problem, the answer seems to be, DON'T format an SATA drive in Win XP before trying to install a new XP Pro system on it!
With this ASUS motherboard, be careful that the BIOS settings are correct (the SATA controller is also a RAID controller) and be sure the drive is completely blank (no partitions). Start XP installation, install the RAID driver from the ASUS CD (I used a floppy copy) and XP will partition the new drive, format it and install with no more problems (as I would have expected originally....:) ). If it doesn't work, you have incorrect BIOS settings, so try other settings - and start again by deleting all partitions from the drive (you could use the Linux GParted!)!
This reminds me of when I was chief engineer of a business computer company in the 70's. If local engineers couldn't fix a system, I had to find a way - I always did, eventually (it didn't help that many of the customers were lawers & were likely to sue you if the computer wasn't fixd quickly - that's really being put under pressure!).
Sometimes it is good - for experiences sake - to be left to your own devices! There is always a way!
